Preparation Guide for the S&OP‑Support Role

1. Understand the Core Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering or Industrial Engineering & Production.
• Minimum two years of relevant experience in manufacturing environments such as FMCG, automotive, battery or storage cell production.
• Age requirement of at least 25 years.
• Strong grasp of supply‑chain functions: demand planning, inventory control, logistics coordination, and procurement integration.

2. Build the Necessary Knowledge Base

a. Supply‑Chain Fundamentals
– Study the end‑to‑end flow of materials from supplier to customer.
– Learn the terminology and processes of Sales & Operations Planning (S&OP), including demand‑supply reconciliation, consensus meetings and performance metrics.

b. Production Planning & Scheduling
– Familiarise yourself with master production scheduling (MPS) and finite capacity planning techniques.
– Practice reading and interpreting Gantt charts, production boards and shop‑floor dashboards.

c. Inventory Management
– Review concepts of safety stock, reorder points, Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) and inventory turnover ratios.
– Explore tools for inventory optimisation such as ABC analysis and FIFO/LIFO methods.

d. Procurement & Materials Management
– Understand the lead‑time dynamics of raw‑material sourcing, vendor‑managed inventory and material requirement planning (MRP).

e. Logistics & Distribution
– Gain insight into inbound and outbound logistics, transportation modes, and warehouse operations.

3. Gain Practical Experience

• Secure a role or project within a manufacturing unit where you can observe or assist the S&OP cycle.
• Volunteer to compile weekly production reports, update forecasts, or monitor inventory levels.
• Participate in cross‑functional meetings with marketing, procurement, production and logistics teams to understand communication flows.

4. Strengthen Technical Skills

– Excel: Advanced functions, pivot tables, macros and data visualisation for reporting.
– ERP Systems: Exposure to SAP, Oracle, or industry‑specific platforms (e.g., Infor, Microsoft Dynamics).
– Forecasting Tools: Basic knowledge of statistical software or modules (e.g., Minitab, R, Python libraries).
– Presentation: Ability to create clear decks for S&OP review meetings.

5. Develop Soft Skills

• Communication – Clear articulation of demand‑supply gaps and actionable recommendations.
• Negotiation – Coordinate with procurement and commercial teams to secure timely material deliveries.
• Problem‑Solving – Quickly identify capacity constraints and propose actionable improvements.
• Time Management – Prioritise daily and weekly tasks to keep production aligned with forecasts.

6. Obtain Relevant Certifications (optional but advantageous)

– APICS Certified in Planning and Inventory Management (CPIM).
– APICS Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP).
– Six Sigma Green Belt for process‑improvement orientation.

7. Tailor Your Resume and Cover Letter

• Highlight the degree(s) obtained and any relevant projects or theses related to manufacturing or supply‑chain.
• List specific achievements such as “Reduced stock‑outs by 12 % through demand‑forecast refinement” or “Improved production schedule adherence from 85 % to 94 %”.
• Emphasise cross‑functional collaboration experience and any exposure to S&OP meetings.

8. Prepare for the Interview

a. Behavioral Questions
– Be ready to discuss a time you coordinated between marketing and production to resolve a forecast mismatch.
– Explain how you handled a material shortage that threatened a production deadline.

b. Technical Questions
– Expect scenario‑based questions on inventory optimisation, capacity planning, and demand variance analysis.
– Review key performance indicators for S&OP (e.g., forecast accuracy, inventory turns, order fulfillment rate).

c. Case Study / Simulation
– Practise a short case where you must align sales forecast with production capacity, propose adjustments, and justify decisions.

9. Continuous Improvement

• Subscribe to industry journals (e.g., Supply Chain Management Review, Manufacturing & Logistics IT).
• Join professional groups or forums focused on S&OP and manufacturing operations.
• Attend webinars or workshops on emerging technologies such as AI‑driven demand forecasting or digital twins for production planning.

10. On‑the‑Job Success Tips

– Maintain an up‑to‑date S&OP calendar and ensure all stakeholders receive timely updates.
– Use visual management boards to track inventory levels, work‑in‑process (WIP) and capacity utilisation.
– Document and share lessons learned after each planning cycle to support continual improvement.
– Adhere strictly to safety, quality and corporate policy standards in all activities.

By following these steps—building the right knowledge base, gaining hands‑on experience, sharpening both technical and interpersonal abilities, and preparing meticulously for the selection process—you will be well positioned to secure and succeed in the S&OP support role described.
