Discussion on job preparation guideline

How to Prepare for the Gender/GBV Expert Position on the EARN Project (CARE Bangladesh)

1. Understand the Role, Scope and Context

- Read the full job description several times. Highlight the five core responsibility groups and note the % of time allocated to each.
- Study the EARN (Economic Acceleration and Resilience for NEET) project background: NEET statistics, gender gaps, climate‑resilience components, the role of the Department of Youth Development (DYD) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MOYS).
- Familiarize yourself with CARE Bangladesh’s vision, mission, core values, safety & security policies and the Code of Conduct.
- Map the key stakeholders that you will interact with: CARE HQ, DYD, MOYS, implementing NGOs, private‑sector partners, community groups, GBV service providers, and donor agencies.

2. Match Your Experience to the Required Competencies

Create a two‑column matrix (you can do this on paper or in a spreadsheet) with “Job Requirement” on the left and “Your Evidence” on the right. For each of the following, write concrete examples (project name, dates, your role, outcomes, numbers):

- 10+ years of gender mainstreaming in development programmes, especially skills development, employment or social protection.
- Development and application of GESI (Gender Equality and Social Inclusion) guidelines.
- Conducting gender and youth analyses that identified barriers and informed programme redesign.
- Designing and operationalising GBV/SEA/SH prevention, response and grievance mechanisms.
- Experience with participatory training, facilitation and capacity‑building for staff and partner NGOs.
- Designing monitoring tools, indicators and reporting frameworks for gender‑responsive interventions.
- Strong analytical, documentation and report‑writing outputs (policy briefs, technical notes, evaluation reports).
- Fluency in Bangla and English (provide writing samples in both languages if possible).

If you notice any gaps, plan short‑term actions to fill them (e.g., a rapid online course on GBV case management, reading recent CARE gender manuals, etc.).

3. Prepare Your Application Documents

- Curriculum Vitae – Use a clear, chronological format. Begin with a 3‑sentence professional summary that mirrors the headline of the vacancy (e.g., “Gender and GBV specialist with 12 years of experience integrating GESI into youth‑employment programmes in Bangladesh”). Follow with sections: Professional Experience, Key Achievements (quantify), Education, Technical Skills (MS Office, data‑visualisation tools), Languages, and Professional Memberships.
- Cover Letter – One page max. Structure: (a) Why you are motivated to join CARE Bangladesh and the EARN project; (b) How your background matches each of the five responsibility areas; (c) One or two concrete achievements that illustrate your capacity to lead gender integration and GBV response; (d) Closing statement expressing commitment to learning agility and knowledge‑sharing.
- Supporting Annexes – If the application portal allows, attach: (i) A brief portfolio of gender analyses or GESI guidelines you authored; (ii) Sample training modules or facilitation plans; (iii) Monitoring framework you designed; (iv) References (provide names, titles, contact details).

Proof‑read everything in both English and Bangla; consider asking a colleague to review for clarity and brevity.

4. Deepen Technical Knowledge

- Gender & GESI – Review CARE’s “Gender Equality” and “GESI Guidelines” (available on CARE’s website). Read UN Women’s “Gender Equality Seal” and recent publications on gender‑responsive youth employment.
- GBV/SEA/SH – Study the WHO/UNFPA “Minimum Standards for Prevention and Response to GBV”. Look at CARE’s “Safeguarding Policy” and “Humanitarian GBV Technical Handbook”.
- Climate‑Responsive Programming – Read the IPCC summary for policymakers on climate‑change impacts on livelihoods in South Asia; examine CARE’s climate‑adaptation toolkits.
- Monitoring & Evaluation – Refresh knowledge on logical framework (logframe) development, gender‑sensitive indicator design, and tools such as the Gender Integration Framework (GIF).
- Bangladeshi Legal Context – Familiarize yourself with the Domestic Violence (Prevention and Protection) Act 2010, the Sexual Harassment Act 2013, and the National Strategy for Women’s Empowerment (2019‑2024).

Take concise notes and create a “cheat sheet” of key definitions, frameworks and acronyms you expect to discuss.

5. Interview Preparation

- Behavioural/Competency Questions – Prepare STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) stories for each core responsibility. Example prompts:
*“Tell us about a time you developed GESI guidelines for a large‑scale programme.”*
*“Describe how you built a referral network for GBV survivors in a remote area.”*
*“Explain how you integrated climate‑sensitisation into a skills‑development curriculum.”*
- Technical Case Study – Anticipate a scenario where you must design a gender‑responsive monitoring plan for vocational training. Draft a quick outline (objectives, indicators, data sources, frequency, responsible parties).
- Role‑Play – You may be asked to facilitate a short participatory exercise. Practice delivering a 5‑minute activity that elicits community perceptions on women’s mobility.
- Questions for the Panel – Prepare thoughtful questions that show strategic thinking, e.g., “How does the PMU currently coordinate GESI monitoring across implementing partners?” or “What are the biggest challenges you have faced in sustaining GBV referral services in rural settings?”

Conduct mock interviews with a peer or mentor, focusing on clear articulation, confidence and linking every answer back to the EARN project’s outcomes.

6. Practical Skills Refresh

- Facilitation – Run a short training session (10‑15 minutes) for colleagues on “Identifying gender barriers in youth employment”. Record yourself, watch the playback, note pacing and engagement techniques.
- Writing – Draft a one‑page briefing note on “Integrating SEB (Socio‑Emotional Behaviour) skills into women’s entrepreneurship programmes”. Share with a senior colleague for feedback.
- Data Management – Practice using Excel for gender‑disaggregated data analysis (pivot tables, conditional formatting, basic charts). If you have access to Power BI or Tableau, create a simple dashboard prototype.

7. Personal Readiness & Well‑Being

- Review CARE’s safety, security and safeguarding policies. Ensure you have a personal emergency plan (local contacts, health insurance, secure travel documents).
- Reflect on your motivation and resilience; the role can involve emotionally heavy GBV cases. Consider a brief self‑care plan (regular debriefs, peer support, professional counselling if needed).

8. Timeline (Suggested 6‑Week Plan)

Week 1 – Re‑read the job description, map requirements, start the matrix.
Week 2 – Update CV and draft cover letter; gather supporting documents.
Week 3 – Complete technical reading (CARE GESI, GBV manuals, climate tools).
Week 4 – Build STAR stories, practice mock interviews, conduct a facilitation trial.
Week 5 – Finalise application, proof‑read, submit before deadline.
Week 6 – Continue interview prep: case study outline, data‑tool practice, self‑care routine.

Final Thought

Treat the preparation process as a project of its own: define scope, allocate resources (time, reference material, mentors), monitor progress, and adjust as needed. By aligning every piece of evidence you present with CARE’s values and the specific EARN responsibilities, you will demonstrate not only competence but also the learning agility and collaborative spirit the organisation seeks. Good luck!
